Di keseharian pasti kamu sudah familiar dengan tenses seperti simple present tense, present perfect, simple future? ya, benar sekali ketiga istilah tadi adalah beberapa contoh dari tenses yang ada di dalam bahasa Inggris.

Pengertian tense

Untuk memahami pengertian tenses lebih lanjut, mari kita perhatikan pengertian di bawah ini.

Menurut Oxford Learner's Dictionary tenses dinyatakan sebagai “any of the forms of a verb that may be used to show the time of the action or state expressed by the verb.”

Menurut Meriam-Webster Dictionary tenses adalah “a distinction of form in a verb to express distinctions of time or duration of the action or state it denotes.”

Dari pengertian di atas dapat kita simpulkan istilah 'tense' merupakan perubahan bentuk kata kerja atau verb yang berubah berdasarkan keterangan waktu di dalam sebuah kalimat.

Secara garis besar di dalam bahasa Inggris tenses dibagi menjadi tiga kategori berdasarkan waktunya yaitu:

• Present Tense

• Past Tense

• Future Tense

Kemudian dari tiga tenses di atas, setiap tenses dibagi lagi menjadi empat jenis lagi yaitu:

• Simple Tense

• Continuous Tense/Progressive Tense

• Perfect Tense

• Perfect Continuous Tense

Jadi secara umum tenses berjumlah 12 tenses, untuk kamu yang sering mendengar tenses berjumlah 16 tenses, tenang, kamu tidak salah, 4 tenses lagi merupakan gabungan dari dua tenses saja kok.

Jenis-Jenis Tenses dalam Bahasa Inggris

Sudah kita ketahuhi bahwa tenses di dalam bahasa Inggris berjumlah 16 tenses, untuk penjelasan lebih jelasnya silahkan simak penjelasan di berikut.

Present Tense

1. Simple Present Tense Tense ini menyatakan kegiatan yang berulang -ulang atau kebiasaan serta menjelaskan tentang kebenaraan umum. Contoh: - I go to school every 7 A.M. - She is a student. - The sun rises from east.

2. Present Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang terjadi saat ini. Tense ini terkadang juga dapat digunakan untuk menggambarkan tindakan yang direncanakan di masa depan. Contoh: - She is running at sport center now. - They are watching movie on Netflix right now. - He is running for the president next year.

3. Present Perfect Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tidakan yang sudah selesai di masa lalu, namun masih memiliki hubungan dengan masa sekarang. Contoh: - We have finished the task recently. - I just have arrived at home. - She hasn't found the key.

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan yang sudah dimulai di masa lalu dan masih berlanjut sampai masa sekarang. Contoh: - We have been waiting for you for 30 minutes. - She has been working as a teacher for 10 years. - I have been writing this essay for one week.

Past Tense

1. Simple Past Tense Tense ini menjelaskan tindakan yang terjadi di masa lalu. Contoh: - I bought a new phone yesterday. - She met her old friend at the park last week. - Did you go to office party last night.

2. Past Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan kegiatan yang sedang terjadi pada periode waktu tertentu di masa lalu. Contoh: - We were walking in the field when the rain fell down. - We were working on our assignment when our parents came home. - My roommate was listening music all the time, so I decided to move out.

3. Past Perfect Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan yang sudah selesai sebelum tindakan lainnya. Contoh: - I had read the novel before I watch the movie. - The bus arrived after I had called my parent. - I move to this company after I had finished Magister Degree.

4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan tindakan yang sudah dimulai dan masih berlangsung sebelum peristiwa lain di masa lalu. Contoh: - We had been driving for 30 minutes before we realized we were lost. - We had been waiting for a long time before the bus finally arrived. - I'd been working for this report all night, so I was so tired in this morning.

Future Tense

1. Simple Future Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan yang belum terjadi dan akan terjadi di masa depan. Contoh: - I will walk to school tomorrow. - Don't worry, I'm going to pay for the coffee. - She will apply for the new job next week.

2. Future Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan yang belum selesai dan sedang terjadi di masa depan. Contoh: - I will be studiying at 10 A.M. tomorrow. - This plane will be landing in 10 minutes. - She will be running 5 km tomorrow.

3. Future Perfect Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan tindakan yang akan selesai di masa depan. Contoh: - We will have graduated from Senior High School by next year. - I will have been in Medan by next week. - She will have retired from the company by 2030.

4. Future Perfect Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan seberapa lama tindakan yang akan sedang terjadi di masa depan. Contoh: - I will have been working for this company for 5 years by 2024. - By the time I get there, He will have been waiting for an hour. - By November next year, He will have been studying in University of Melbourne for two years.

Past Future Tense

1. Simple Past Future Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan di masa depan dari sudut pandang masa lalu. Contoh: - I would get the scholarship - He didn't inform that he would study in Australia - She would be angry if I didn't tell the truth

2. Past Future Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan suatu peristiwa yang akan terjadi di masa lalu. Contoh: - I would be doing my report all day long next two days. - We would be traveling to Raja Ampat if We applied the volunteer. - I would be visiting my sister if I had work there.

3. Past Future Perfect Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan atau mengekspresikan ide di masa lalu. Contoh: - We would have finished the project two days ago if We had started earlier. - If I had forgiven him, I would have married with him. - He told the students that they should have finished the homework this morning.

4. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan tindakan yang seharusnya sudah berlangsung di masa lalu dan menekankan pada durasi waktu yang sudah berlalu dan hasil. Contoh: - We would have been studying at the Magister Program in Australia for one year by the end of last month. - I would have been writing this essay for a week by the end of this month. - Diana would not have been recording the short movie project for three days by the end of this week.
